Chapter Eight

I’d set the alarm on my phone to wake me at six, so I could be up and out before JJ woke up.

That meant I only got four hours sleep, but it would have to do. At the screech from my phone, I rolled over, fell off the couch, and hit the floor. It took me a second to remember where I was and once that second passed, the bullet wounds started to ache like SOBs. As I inspected them, I realized they were well on their way to healing. Soon they’d be nothing more than a painful memory–one among many.

In the cramped bathroom, I borrowed a dollop of toothpaste and used my finger to brush my teeth, then stripped and got into the shower. The hot water made the bloody dressings peel and I pulled them off–they were no longer really necessary, the skin had closed and barely a mark remained.

Not wanting to use up all the hot water, I quickly rinsed off, scrubbing away the worst of the blood stains, then turned off the tap and drew back the curtain.

“Oh!” Sierra’s voice was as shocked as her expression.

Apparently, I’d forgotten to lock the door and it was at that precise moment that Sierra entered. Her eyes, wide with startled surprise, flicked up and down my naked body. She swallowed hard. I swallowed even harder.

“Towel in the cupboard,” she blurted, then hurried out, closing the door behind her.

Modesty is very much a human concept–Angels don’t get embarrassed about their bodies because our bodies are part of who we are, and also because every body is perfect (though Angels still wear clothes–strange, really). But, as with other aspects of my nature, humanity had taken its toll on me and I found myself profoundly guilty at having accidentally flashed my junk at Sierra. She hadn’t seemed desperately offended by it, but such wasn’t how I’d planned to say thank you.

Dried and dressed, I went back to the living room to find my couch bed stripped and a cup of coffee waiting for me on the coffee table.

“Milk and sugar. I took a guess.” Sierra was standing in the kitchen, stirring her own coffee. She was standing in her tattered robe, which really didn’t detract at all from her beauty.

“Thank you.”

“Thanks for getting out early.”

I nodded and slugged back a mouthful of coffee. “I’ll drink this and go.”

“You’ve got time for a bowl of cereal, if you’d like.” Then she smiled. “If you like marshmallows and chocolate krispies.”

I paused. “I guess I’ve got time for a bowl.”

She smiled. “You have a sweet tooth.”

“Yes.”

She poured the cereal and added milk.

“Sorry about walking in on you when you were in the shower.”

“I’m the one who should apologize.”

Sierra shook her head. “I don’t know what I was thinking. I mean… I heard the shower on and I thought maybe it was Kelli. But, she’s never up this early.” She flushed. “Guess I forgot I had a house guest.”

“Sorry.”

Sierra looked at me and there was something in her expression that hinted to the fact that there was more going on in her head.
